Tanzanite is a named variety of the mineral zoisite. The mineral zoisite is a fairly uncommon mineral in the epidote group. Gem-grade samples of the zoisite variety tanzanite are only found in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania where tanzanite was discovered in 1967.
